One of Finland’s largest solar parks was built on the former Isosuo peat production area in Utajärvi. Terawatt was responsible for delivering the park’s electrical contracting works.

An expectionally large-scale solar park project

The Utajärvi solar park project was developed by Skarta Oy, whose goal is to operate 800 MW of solar power by the end of 2028. NYAB Plc was selected as the main contractor for the solar park. The park was designed to cover an area of approximately 150 hectares, most of which consists of former peat production land.

The scale of the project is also reflected in the number of solar panels installed: more than 170,000 bifacial solar panels were installed at the site, with Wisol Oy responsible for panel installation. Terawatt acted as Wisol’s subcontractor, delivering the electrical works up to the inverter level.

DC cabling required innovative solutions

The scale of the project and the ground conditions presented significant challenges for implementation. Terawatt was responsible for the DC cabling from the panel tables to the string combiner boxes located at the ends of the tables, from where larger feeder cables continued toward the inverters. The panel tables were constructed on soft and damp peat soil.

During the planning phase, various risk factors — including fire safety considerations — were carefully taken into account. Ultimately, the greatest challenge proved to be the moist and at times extremely waterlogged terrain, which made on-site movement and installation particularly demanding.

Terawatt made substantial investments in specialized equipment to ensure that cabling could be installed despite the difficult conditions, without causing delays to the project schedule. In addition, detailed pilot installations were planned and carried out in close cooperation with the client and main contractor to ensure consistently high quality of work.

Electrification of the entire solar park

Initially, Terawatt’s scope of work included the connection of the solar panels as well as the construction and cabling of the panel strings during the first phase of the project, which covered approximately half of the solar park. However, smooth cooperation and efficient execution enabled the scope of the contract to be expanded to cover the entire solar power plant.

In addition, Terawatt carried out the medium-voltage works within the solar park area, including termination and jointing of medium-voltage cables. These tasks were not always straightforward, particularly in cold and wintery terrain.

Despite the challenging conditions, the solar power plant was completed on schedule, and the first section of the park began feeding electricity into the national grid in May 2025.
